Chapter 18 of 24 · The Third War
Just after the Third War
1 min read
As the Lich King weakened, Sylvanas Windrunner broke free with other undead and claimed the ruins of Lordaeron as the Forsaken.
After Archimonde's fall, the Lich King's grip began to slip. Illidan, now serving Kil'jaeden, struck at the Frozen Throne, and Arthas rushed north to defend his master. In Lordaeron the dreadlords tried to seize the Scourge for themselves, and in the chaos many undead regained their own wills.
Sylvanas Windrunner was the first. With her banshees and other free undead, and with the dreadlord Varimathras forced to serve her, she defeated her rivals and claimed the ruined capital of Lordaeron. Beneath it lay the old royal crypts and sewers, which became the Undercity. Her people named themselves the Forsaken: no longer human, unwanted by the living and free of the Lich King.
Arthas reached Icecrown, took up the Lich King's helm and merged with him upon the Frozen Throne, then fell silent behind the ice. The Forsaken, surrounded by enemies, joined Thrall's Horde as uneasy allies, while the Scourge, the Scarlet Crusade and what remained of Lordaeron's nobles fought over the Plaguelands. Forever's story picks up after Warcraft III: Reforged's 'Forsaken Kingdom' campaign, whose events this guide does not yet cover.
