Sargeras and the Burning Legion

Chapter 2 of 24 · Titans and Old Gods
Long before the night elves
1 min read
The Pantheon's greatest champion lost his faith in creation and raised a demonic crusade to burn it, and Azeroth became the prize he wanted most.
Sargeras was the Pantheon's champion, the titan who hunted demons across the cosmos and locked them in a prison world called Mardum. Over ages of war he learned what the void lords truly wanted: to corrupt a world-soul and birth a dark titan of their own. Convinced that creation was flawed beyond saving, he decided it would be kinder to burn everything.
He shattered the prison of Mardum and set its demons loose as the first ranks of the Burning Legion. On the world of Argus he offered the eredar knowledge and power; their leaders Kil'jaeden and Archimonde accepted, while the prophet Velen fled with those who refused, the people later called the draenei. The Pantheon tried to stop their former champion and were struck down by his hand.
From then on the Legion moved from world to world, led by Sargeras and served by the eredar, the dreadlords called nathrezim and countless lesser demons. Azeroth mattered more than most: a world-soul still sleeping, already marked by the Old Gods. By the time of World of Warcraft the Legion had invaded it twice, and its whispers shaped the history of elves, orcs and humans alike.
